Savannah Plantation in Live Oak, Florida, is located 53 minutes from Gainesville and 58 minutes from Jacksonville, placing this housing community in a perfect location. Live Oak is in Suwannee County and is part of the Lake City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The land present-day Savannah Plantation occupies belonged to the Utina who were a subgroup of the western Timucua peoples and the Seminole. Before Spanish explorer and soldier Hernando de Soto landed on the shores of Tampa Bay in 1539 with his expedition team, the Seminole had long since claimed the area between Live Oak and Lake City and formed a settlement called “Alligator Village.” During the 17th century, Spain built the Santa Cruz de Tarihica just west of Alligator Village in hopes of establishing an agricultural base, as well as nurturing a good relationship with the local Natives. The Seminole didn’t keep records, so there is no way of knowing when they established Alligator Village. Nevertheless, it’s possible they arrived a little before being various tribal wars taking place in Georgia and South Carolina. Ultimately, the Spanish Empire was unable to fund their operations in Florida and ceded the territory to the United States in 1821. In 1858, Suwannee County was formed, with Live Oak being as its county seat.
