Before its incorporation, people called it "Rowland's Bluff," but was officially changed to "New Branford" upon its incorporation. At some point in the town's history, the word "New" was dropped and it became "Branford." It began as a loading point for steamboats hauling timber down the Suwannee River to Cedar Key.
