Westwood Acres in Live Oak, Florida, is located 47 miles from Gainesville and 64 miles from Jacksonville, making this an ideal place to own a home. Live Oak is in Suwannee County and is part of the Lake City Micropolitan Statistical Area. Present-day Westwood used to be inhabited by two large Native American tribes, the Utina who were a subgroup of the western Timucua peoples and the Seminole. Before the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto arrived in Tampa Bay in 1539, the Seminole had long since established a settlement in this area called “Alligator Village.” During the 17th century, missionaries from Spain built the Santa Cruz de Tarihica just west of Alligator Village in hopes of establishing an agricultural base, as well as nurturing a good relationship with the local Natives. The Seminole didn’t keep historical records indicating when they settled in the area, but it’s possible they arrived sometime in the early 1700s as they were fleeing various tribal wars taking place in Georgia and South Carolina. Ultimately, the Spanish Empire was unable to fund their operations in Florida and ceded the territory to the United States in 1821. In 1858, Suwannee County was formed, with Live Oak being as its county seat.
